Former Union Minister and Governor Kalraj Mishra on Friday said that the idea of ‘One Nation, One Election’ will not only make Indian democracy stronger but also help in speeding up the country’s development.
The statement came during an event organised by the Radheshyam Charitable Foundation. Calling the proposal important for India’s future, Mishra said the idea goes beyond politics and should be seen as a national need.
“This is not about one party. It is about the nation. Holding elections at the same time across the country will make policy planning easier and reduce both the cost and pressure on manpower,” he said.
He also mentioned that the idea was first included in the BJP’s 1984 manifesto and has been seriously taken forward by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recent years.
Professor Ramakant Dwivedi, Director of the India Central Asia Foundation, also spoke at the event. He explained why it is necessary to reduce the number of elections held in the country.
He said doing so would help save resources and keep the focus on governance. He also discussed the possible benefits and challenges of the plan.
Dr Khyati, a medical professional, said that a single, united election process would lead to better coordination in government work. Former BJP National Secretary Sunil Devdhar added that the party, under PM Modi’s leadership, is working to build agreement on the idea across the country. “Our goal is to make the election system simple and hold all elections every five years,” he said.
Dr DP Tiwari, Vice Chancellor of Jai Minesh Adivasi University in Ranpur (Kota), said that with strong political will, holding elections across India on the same day is possible.
“One Nation, One Election is not just a reform—it’s a national need,” he said.
The event began with a two-minute silence to pay tribute to the victims of the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, which included former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
